Bordeaux VS Rioja – 8 days/7 nights

Welcome to the winelovers Tour. Travelling throughout Bordaux vineyards and Rioja landscape to learn and discover the history, the culture and flavours of the wine in this two wine regions. Two of the most best known and important wine regions in the World.

During 8 days you will discover the different wine areas in Bordaux such as Médoc or Sauternes, visit amazing villages such as St Emillion, walk the highest dune in Europe, enjoy the local food with 8 great food experiences such as welcome and farewell dinner, picnic at a Chateaux, Cider House lunch or a traditional meal in a winery in Rioja. We will compare the wines produced in Bordaux and Rioja and we will learn about the historical relation between this wine regions. The trip will take place in a new comfortable van for max 6 passengers. The trip is ideal for group of friends or for just a couple. Our idea is never mix groups.

The tour will start in Bordeaux, France and finishes in Bilbao, Spain. During the tour you will spend 4 days in France and 4 days in Spain discovering the gastronomy, incredible villages and fantastic wine lanscapes.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Bordeaux

Welcome to Bordeaux. Land of wine and history. Today we will meet at the hotel to do a welcome meeting and meet the Tour Guide. The meeting is at 17:00. During the meeting we will discuss about the trip. Review the itinerary and the inclusions day by day.

After the meeting we will have time to do a quick exploring in Bordeaux old town before going to a restaurant and enjoy a degustation menu with local products and will be the first contact with the local wines.

Day 2 Médoc and St Emillion

After breakfast, we will embark on out first day tour outside Bordeaux. We will focus today in 2 of the most famous wine regions inside Bordeaux, Médoc and St Emillion. The first one is well known for the awarded red wines such as Chateaux Latour or Chateaux Margaux, known as Grand Crú. We will do a wine tasting in a Chateau in Médoc before crossing the Gironde Estuary and continue our way to St Emillion. Here we will do a second tasting in a Chateaux paired with a picnic made with local products. During the afternoon we will have time to discover the charming St Emillion, before going back to Bordeaux where you will have a free evening.

Day 3 Sauternes

Today, after our breakfast in the hotel we will discover the southern wine region of Bordeaux, Sauternes area. Well known for the incredible sweet wines made with Semillon variety, Sauternes is located southeast of the city and that is the area where 2000 years ago the first vines were cultivated in the region. We will visit a Sauternes Wine Chateau and you will try some of the marvellous sweet wines.

After the visit we will go back to Bordeaux where you will have free afternoon to explore La Cité du Vin, one of the most impressive Wine Museums in the World (ticket included). Free evening.

Day 4 Arcachon

Today we will travel to the Atlantic coast to visit one of the most interesting towns in Aquitaine. Arcacho is a fisherman town famous for the product they breed, the oysters. We will start in the morning visiting the highest dune in Europe, Pilat Dune, which you can climb to get fantastic views from they top. Then we will move to the nearby town, Arcachon where you will have the privilege to do an Oyster tasting paired with some white wine. You will have some free time in Arcachon before going back to Bordeaux, where we will do a farewell dinner to say goodbye to France.

Tonight is perfect to practice everything learnt in Bordeaux Wine Region because we will do the dinner in a famous winebar where you can choose from 40 different wine references to taste.

Day 5 Rioja

Say À bientôt to France and Hola to Spain. Today, after breakfast we will travel south to Spain. First stop in the country will be related with food, for sure! We will visit a traditional Cider House in Basque Country, where we will enjoy a traditional Cider House menu with chorizo, Codfish omelette, fried Codfish with peppers, T-Bone steak and desert, paired with the house-made natural cider. Yes! Everything is included, welcome to Basque Country!

In the afternoon, after lunch, we will continue our trip to Logroño, the main city in Rioja. Maybe is the perfect time to have your first siesta in the van. Here, after some relaxed time we will explore the old town and we will finish the day looking for the best pintxos in town and to drink our first Rioja’s.

Day 6 Rioja Alta & Rioja Alavesa

Good morning. Hope you slept well because today is time to explore Rioja. In the morning we will start the day introducing the history of the wine in Rioja. At the same time we will visit a family-run winery where you will start noticing the different wines are produced in Rioja. Then we will go to a modern winery where we will have a traditional Rioja lunch paired with red wine.

After lunch it’s time to explore the beatiful landscape of Rioja. We will visit a couple of charming villages such as Briones or Laguardia and we will have the opportunity to admire some of the most beatiful wineries in the World such as Marqués de Riscal Hotel, designed by Frank Gehry. Already in Logroño you will have a free evening to keep exploring the Pintxos bars in the old town.

Day 6 Rioja Alta & Bilbao

After breakfast we will drive to Haro, known as the capital of Rioja Wine. Here we will learn about the history of the town and its importance during the XIX century. We will visit the famous Barrio de la Estación (Station district) where the wineries concentrated creating winery cluster. You will enjoy some wine tastings in some of the most important wineries in Rioja as Muga, López de Heredia, Rioja Alta or Roda.

After do couple of tastings we will continue our trip to Bilbao in Basque Country. The jouney takes about 1 hour, so you will have some free time to have some pintxos. Early in the afternoon you will meet again your guide to do a walk in Bilbao to show you the most amazing places in the city such as the Guggenheim Museum or the Old Town, before having a unique farewell dinner in a Michelin reccommended Restaurant (Degustation menu).
