Reasons not to miss this trip

Departing from Madrid, the capital of Spain, for 10 days we will enter the oenological world through several Spanish wine regions. Being a trip with an oenological soul, we will visit the two flagships of the Spanish reds, Rioja  and Ribera del Duero. Although, of course, we can taste wines of other characteristics and other Spanish wine appellations.

The trip was designed so that the stages are short and, in this way, be able to make the most of time in each destination and enjoy the local curiosities. Staying at amazing 4 and luxury 5-star hotels you won’t want go back home.

We will also be able to savor the local gastronomy with several lunches and dinners included (including Michelin Starred meals). Among the typical dishes that you will be able to taste, you will find the suckling pig from Segovia, the ‘lechazo’ (lamb) from Ribera del Duero, the Riojan style potatoes or the grilled fish and meat from the Basque area. Visit with us two artisan cheese factories and go truffle hunting (available from November to March).

A trip that, in addition to the gastronomic part, includes an important cultural part with stops in Segovia, Bilbao or San Sebastián. Now you must choose when you join this gastronomic adventure.

Day 1 Madrid – D

Welcome to Madrid! The capital of Spain awaits you with its doors open. Today in the afternoon you will meet with the tour guide to meet him and learn more about the trip.

After a short meeting, you will accompany the rest of the group to a welcome dinner at a restaurant in the capital. But not just any restaurant. Today you are going to have the privilege of dining in the oldest restaurant in the world (Guiness Record). Casa Botín. Famous for its roast meats, tonight is your first contact with Castilian cuisine.

Day 2 Segovia – Ribera del Duero – B,L

We leave Madrid heading north to visit the beautiful city of Segovia. It is said that Walt Disney was inspired by this castle for his drawings. Whether it is true or not, the truth is that the Alcázar of Segovia is, together with the Roman Aqueduct, the icons of this small Castilian city. You will join your tour leader on a walk through the steep streets of Segovia to the Alcazar, which you will visit. The walk will begin at the foot of the more than 2000-year-old Roman aqueduct that spanned the valley to bring water to the Roman fortress. We will pass by the cathedral and we will be able to discover some incredible buildings in the city. After the walk, it is time to regain strength and there is nothing better than a degustation menu in one of the best restaurants in the city. Discover the Segovian flavors with modern touches. Suckling pig, white beans stew, soups and typical products on the lunch menu that is included. Wine is included in the menu and is worth it!. Considered one of the best wineries in Spain, Pago de Carraovejas was born to be able to offer a high-quality house wine in the menu of the restaurant of its creator, José María.

After lunch you will continue your way to Ribera del Duero where you will spend the next 3 nights in a magical hotel. A 5-star hotel inside a medieval Monastery by the river and behind the most famous wineries in the region as Vega Sicilia. Enjoy the rest of the evening wandering on the cloister or relaxing at the spa.

Day 3 Rueda – Ribera del Duero – B,D

After breakfast we will go to the Rueda Wine Appellation, where farmers have been working with one of the oldest grapes in Spain, the Verdejo grape. It has produced fine, fruity and very high-quality white wines. We will do a visit and check the quality of its wines. After the visit we will visit a cheese factory where we can learn about the process of making local sheep cheese. In the evening we have one of the highlights during our trip. Our first Michelin-Star meal. We will take our transport to go Arzuaga Winery Restaurant prized with 1 star. Here you will enjoy a 10-couse meal.

Day 4 Ribera del Duero – B,L

After breakfast, we will go on a tourthrough Ribera del Duero. The winery that we will visit first is a historic winery, pioneer of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, with caves dating back more than 400 years and producing magnificent wines. After visiting the caves and tasting we can enjoy a traditional meal in a top winery. Designed in the Chateau style, this winery produces only 2 wines, but they are extraordinary. We will enjoy a traditional meal where lamb is the famous dish in this area. Then we will return to the hotel to have time to rest.

Day 5 Rioja – B,D

We leave Ribera del Duero to enter Rioja, a more complex wine region, where in addition to the classic reds (Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva), whites, rosés and even cava are made.

On the way, we will make two stops. The first is to discover the truffle that grows in the Soria area of ​​Spain. Truffle hunting is seasonal and can only be done between November and March. We will learn more about this delicacy and we will be able to taste something. After the truffle activity, we will go to Logroño, but first we will stop at an oil mill to learn the secrets of the liquid gold produced in Spain. Spain is the largest olive oil producer in the world and represents 35% of world production. We will do a tasting of different oils. Upon arrival in Logroño, we will have time to rest for a while before enjoying our second Michelin Star dinner, in a restaurant in the center of the city. Menu of 11 dishes in which we will transport ourselves from traditional Spanish cuisine, the Basque avant-garde, to South American flavors.

Day 6 Rioja – B

Today is time to visit Rioja Alavesa, one of the sub-zones inside Rioja Wine Appellation. Rioja is divided in 3 subregions. Alavesa, Oriental and Alta. Oriental is famous for the young wines, rosé and the use of grenache variety. Alta and Alavesa are famous for the use of tempranillo and for making the traditional Riojan Reds. During the day there are many surprises as having an Architecture tour to see the most impressive wineries designed by the best architects in the world, as Frank Gehry or Santiago Calatrava. Then we will go back to Logroño where you can put yourself in the shoes of a Riojan eating pintxos in calle Laurel.

Day 7 Rioja – B,L

The morning, after breakfast, we will spend in discovering Rioja Alta, where we can discover the beautiful medieval towns here and their wines. We will go to the famous Barrio de la Estación, in Haro where you will enjoy free time in case you want to do some wine tasting in one of the very important wineries that are concentrated here. The impetus for Rioja wine was given by the appearance of phylloxera in the middle of the 19th century, when French vintners came to the area to start buying wine from here, but not just any wine. They wanted Bordeaux-style wine, so Rioja wineries began to modify their elaborations and their own style was born, Rioja wine. After visiting the station neighborhood, we will go to a winery to enjoy a Rioja tasting menu, where there will be no shortage of potatoes with chorizo or cod. The rest of the afternoon is free.

Day 8 Bilbao -B,D

We say goodbye to La Rioja to travel to one of the cultural and gastronomic destinations in Spain, Bilbao. Route that we will make making a stop at a cheese factory in Idiazábal. A cured sheep cheese that is usually smoked and is considered one of the jewels of cheeses. We will visit a family factory and do a commented tasting of the cheeses that are made. After the visit we will continue on our way to Bilbao where in the afternoon we can go with the leader for a walk to see the highlights of Bilbao.

Tonight, to celebrate our arrival in the Basque Country, we will enjoy a tasting menu in a restaurant where its chef has a Michelin star (in another restaurant). 5-course menu with wine included to enjoy Basque gastronomy.

Day 9 San Sebastián – Bilbao – B,L

There can be no gastronomic trip worth its salt without paying a visit to San Sebastián. For today, we propose an excursion to Donosti (San Sebastián) where you can admire Playa de la Concha and its magnificent houses on the beachfront. After a journey of an hour, today it’s today is the time to use your hands and introduce to Basque cuisine. In one of the most exclusive cooking schools in the city, we can discover the secrets of Basque gastronomy and why in this city of just 200 thousand inhabitants there are 6 starred restaurants, including 2 with 3 Michelin stars. After the course, we will be able to eat what you have prepared and in the afternoon, you will enjoy free time to explore San Sebastián before returning to Bilbao. It’s time to have your last pintxos in the city!

Day 10 End of Services – B

Today is the last day of our tour. We say good-bye to Bilbao and to Spain. Airport transfer to Bilbao is included but if you are planning to go back to Madrid is possible too with an extra cost (could include extra accommodation too)
